Courses

A 2-day course suitable for those with previous paddlings skills and some recent paddling experience. The course is open to those over 12 years old accompanied by an adult participant, as the autumn water conditions can be cold.

Friday: arriving at hostel. For those arriving late afternoon an evening meal can be booked for an additional cost or there are several places in Okehampton that serve food until later (9.00 pm).

Saturday: After breakfast the Instructor will meet you for the start of the day. There will be a “getting to know you” session, where the instructor will get information about your past experience of Kayaking. On the first day you will usually cover further sessions about safety on the water, suitable technqiues for paddling river 2/3 conditions, and what to do if you capsize.

Sunday: After breakfast the Instructor will meet you for the start of the day. There will be a “review” session, about the first day. Then you will have a second kayak day on a local river returning to the Youth Hostel arriving mid afternoon for a final debrief from Leader.

The rivers used will vary depending on river conditions and the experience of the participants. A safe session extending your skills will be our priority. Several of our instructors are have advanced coaching certificates and spend their spare time exploring different white water rivers in south-west England, north Wales, and various countries around the world.

You will need:

  • Suitable clothing (rash vest to wear under wet suit, day rucksack)
  • Wet Boots (or old trainers)
  • Personal belongings (washbag etc.)
  • You are welcome to bring your own kayak equipment if preferred.

If you want a course arranged for a different date, we require a minimum of six or more individuals to run a session. Contact John Elson to get further information about availability.
