Adventure Okehampton specialises in providing activities for groups of all ages and is licensed by the UK Adventure and Activity Licensing Authority as a registered activity provider. Licences can be confirmed by calling the authority at Tel: +44 (0) 2920 755715.

We have Quality Badge from Council of Learning Outside the Classroom, are members of the Institute of Outdoor Learning and our programmes qualify for Children's University.

Many of our groups return year after year! We welcome groups of all ages to Okehampton Youth Hostel. We are set up to be able to take small groups (one module) or large groups (entire hostel). Given advance notice we can cater for a range of special dietary requirements. We offer a range of different activity packages to suit groups of differing ages and budgets.

Residential Group Activity Programmes

Adventure Okehampton have been running Residential Group Activity Holidays for over 19 years in Devon. Situated on the edge of Dartmoor, we offer a wide range of activities with different learning outcomes, as shown by our Quality Badge from Council of Learning outside the Classroom, so whether this is a formal educational trip or a fun residential experience, a programme can be designed to meet your budget and learning requirements.  We are registered with AALA and Adventuremark as an outdoor activity centre, so all our programmes have been approved.

Okehampton, Bracken Tor & The Filter House

We use 4 different full day adventure activity programmes in order to develop each schools individual package.  These can be used in different combinations in order to develop a residential stay programme which typically varies from 2 days to 4 days, where the schools arrive around lunchtime and depart at lunchtime.

Meldon Day

A visit to Meldon Quarry, using the Granite Way cycle trail.  Each participant cycles out to the Quarry, along the traffic free tarmaced cycle trail.  On arrival the participants will be spilt into groups for their activity day, rotating through various adventures such as Gorge Scrambling, Rock Climbing or Orienteering.  At the end of the afternoon they cycle back along the track to the Activity Centre.

Watersports Day

A visit to Adventure Okehampton's lakes, a short distance west of Okehampton.  On arrival the participants will be spilt into groups, rotating through various adventures such as Canoeing, Kayaking, and Raft Building.  At the end of the afternoon they are transported back to the Activity Centre.

Bracken Tor Day

A visit to Bracken Tor activity centre.  Each participant walks to the centre (if resident at the Goods Shed), for their day of adventures.  On arrival the participants will be spilt into groups, rotating through various adventures such as High Ropes, Bushcraft, Mountain Boarding, Archery or Orienteering.  At the end of the afternoon they walk back to the Activity Centre.

Goods Shed Day

A visit to Bracken Tor activity centre.  Each participant walks to the centre (if resident at Bracken Tor), for their day of adventures.  On arrival the participants will be spilt into groups, typically rotating through various adventures such as Low Ropes, Team Games, Climbing Wall, Archery or Orienteering.  At the end of the afternoon they walk back to the Activity Centre (if resident at Bracken Tor).

The half day sessions on arrival and departure days will usually be chosen from Weaselling, Team Building, Orienteering or Archery.

NB: we reserve the right to substitute an alternative activity in the event of unsuitable weather conditions.

 

Groups & Schools Prices at Adventure Okehampton

Our residential packages are based at one of our three accommodation centres in Okehampton, on edge of Dartmoor in Devon. These are ideal for schools and other groups seeking a high quality residential pacakge, to develop a range new skills, in a safe and welcming environment, whilst building team spirit and devlopieng social skills.

All of our residential activity packages include accommodation, meals and activities. We offer 1,2,3 or 4 night breaks on our popular adventure activity programmes, and if you would like a longer stay then please talk to us.

Residential Activity Package Prices

We also provide more specialist residential breaks, which are well suited to overseas groups as they mix work experience, language classes, visits to local industrial and agricultural centres.

We also have a winter activity programme, catering for groups who want to visit us at a quieter time of year, with 2 and 3 night breaks available with a special programme of activities suited to the time of year.

We also offer non-residential Activity Experience Days; activities are for a full day (9.30am - 4.00pm) and timings can be adjusted to suit to allow travel times.

If you would like to tailor make your package and do not require accommodation we can offer the activity bookings on a sessional basis, where each session runs for approximately 2.5 hours (half day).

Residential Activity Prices

All prices are per person and for participants under 18 year, these prices exclude VAT (which is charged as applicable); this is usually recoverable by your local Authority. Please see terms and conditions that apply.

Depending on the group size, one free leader place (accommodation, catering and activities) may be offered with every 10 persons booking a full activity residential package. Any additional leaders will be charged at our full board accommodation rate, prices available on request.

Price includes:

  • Your Accommodation will be at either YHA Okehampton, YHA Bracken Tor House or YHA Bracken Tor Lodge, all Visit England 3 Star Activity Hostel Accommodation. The availability of Sole Use Occupancy is dependent on the size of the group.  The price includes full board accommodation (from evening meal on night of arrival to packed lunch on day of departure).  Special diets catered for with advance notification.  The Booking Manager will liaise on accommodation details such as bed plans and catering requests. Any specific diet requirements can be discussed with the Catering Manager.  
  • The basic price activity package, including activity equipment and instruction. The Activity & Training Coordinator can provide all risk assessments for the planned activity programme and the Activities team is always available for advice when planning the detailed programme.  Some activities, such as Pony Trekking, Surfing, River Trip all have a different cost to the basic package. The price normally includes transport to for basic activity programme unless otherwise stated.  In the event of adverse weather conditions we reserve the right to substitute an alternative activity.
  • Our accounts department will manage the invoicing and payment processing for your visit.

Making a Booking

In order to make a booking, a group booking form must be completed for each group and returned along with the required deposit before your booking is confirmed, as per our terms and conditions.

Breaks4kids helps economically disadvantaged children stay with YHA. Every year, thousands of groups that include children who cannot afford to join their friends on residential trips request our help.

Preparing for Residential Group Stay

About Adventure Okehampton

As the southern-most YHA Adventure Activity centre, we meet YHA standards for accommodation provision, as well as catering. Visit England inspectors gave our accommodation a 3 Star Activity Accommodation rating.

Our aims:

The Adventure Activity Team has a range of instructors with skills in different adventure activities. Many of the senior instructors have been with the team for several years, and we have an active Modern Apprentice scheme run in conjunction with Duchy College, Cornwall, allowing our young instructors to obtain qualifications on the job and progress to senior instructor positions. All of our adventure activities are reviewed on a regular basis by our own advisors as well as AALA inspectors.

Our adventure activity programme has Quality Badge from Council of Learning Outside the Classroom meeting their standards as a recognized provider in Outdoor Learning experiences. 

Staff you may come in contact with whilst arranging your stay

You need JavaScript enabled to view it..  John is a qualified MLTB instructor, as well as the Centre Director for the last 15 years.  Formerly the Leader of North Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team, he is very familiar with the area of North Dartmoor. John is a keen walker, whose recent treks have included the Annapurna Circuit in Nepal and the GR10 in France.

Operation Manager: Paul is the operations manager at Adventure Okehampton.  In the past he served as an activity instructor and has a SPA in climbing.  A Ten Tor veteran in the past, he also knows Dartmoor well, and but today he is more generally found managing the 3 hostel buildings on a day to day basis, from running our building projects, troubleshooting IT issues or helping out with catering.

Bookings Manager:  Anna is your main point for initial bookings at YHA Okehampton, YHA Bracken Tor (both House and Lodge).

Activity and Training Coordinator:  Nicky is the first point of contact for Activity programmes, as well as any people interested in volunteering for work experience.
Chief Instructor:  Dave manages our great team of instructors.

Accounts Department: Libby manages the administration of our accounts department.

British Canoe Union Approved training centre : What does it mean?

A BCU approved centre is your assurance of high standards of safety and qualified instruction.  Equipment and facilities are approved annually and Approved Centre status is only awarded when the approval officers are satisified that all aspects of the canoeing activity at the centre are up to standard. We also have their Paddleability status

NNAS Navigation Training Courses

The scheme was launched in 1994 at the Royal Institute of Navigation in London, and since then over 35,000 people of all ages have gained an award. The NNAS scheme was devised as a non-competitive, personal performance scheme for all ages, to encourage people to be confident in their navigation in the countryside.  NNAS courses do not provide leadership qualifications.
