Here at Adventure Okehampton we can cater for a variety of events from a small conference venue, corporate team-building events, wedding receptions or Christmas Dinner parties.

We are able to work with you to ensure your event is tailored to your requirements. We have an entertainment license allowing us to book bands, run a disco, host a theatre event or host a party.

We are able to offer full catering services and a licensed bar. We can offer hot and cold buffets, 4 course meals through to expedition type meals or toasting marshmallows over a small fire.

We can provide a wide-range of activities with qualified instructors or simply just the settings to host your own event.

Weddings at Bracken Tor

Weddings at Bracken Tor are available to book now, we have Civil license for our pagoda on the lawns, allowing for a wonderful day to remember in quiet grounds of  Bracken Tor House, set on the edge of Dartmoor with wonderful views of the surrounding countryside.

You can choose to get married in the function room, with the stunning views from the paved terrace or in the wooden pagoda on the lawns adjacent.

The grounds were landscaped around 1910, when the house formed part of the Luxmore Estate, and the house sits in 4 acres of landscaped gardens, with bluebell woods above and below.

The venue has 2 accommodation buildings which can sleep up to 72, as well as a separate function room seating 100 on round tables.  We have a full commercial kitchen and can offer a range of catering options, from cold buffets to full 3 course meals with waitress service.

Entertainments options include local bands, barn dances, discos.

Ten Tors on Dartmoor 2012

According to the Official Ten Tors web-site, Okehampton Army Camp is the best place for viewing the fun.

So if you want to support your team, then look for accommodation at our hostels, YHA Bracken Tor or YHA Okehampton. Both sites are within 1 mile of the start, and it's an easy walk up especially from YHA Bracken Tor, which lies just below the Army Camp.

The teams gather at the Army Camp on Friday, for the Kit Check and Registration. Then the teams start their circuit  at 07:00am on Saturday with the aim of completing either 35 45 or 55 miles and visiting each of 10 different Tors over Dartmoor. They finish throughout Sunday from early morning to late afternoon, with a great atmosphere, as family and friends are there to cheer them all home.

The Jubilee Challenge starts at 07:30 on Saturday and must finish by 18:00 that day - and you'll see finishers coming home from 11:00, hugely pleased with their achievements and with the welcome they're receiving.

Although there is car parking space at the Army Camp, you can walk to the camp from the Hostels, and leave your car to save getting caught in the traffic. At the Army Camp there are small exhibitions, refreshments stands, and an information centre where you can get constant updates of team positions on the Moor at Okehampton Camp, as well as seeing the details of the many routes for each challenge distance.

Official advice on walking around the moors that weekend points out that "the Navy, RAF and Army Tor parties welcome non-intrusive visitors - you can watch Teams as they walk in to the checkpoints, and you can applaud them on their journey. What you can not do is offer them any assistance or direction - and that includes food and drink - they will be disqualified if this happens".

At Adventure Okehampton we offer a full board package, as well as other adventure activities for any young brothers and sisters that you may want to entertain over the weekend. We can offer Bushcraft, Kayaking, Climbing Wall, High Ropes and Gorge Scrambling at discount prices, for those with siblings participating in the Ten Tors challenge!

This year, the dates are:

12–13 MAY 2012

Family Rooms start from £39.95 for 4 people.

Twin Rooms (Ensuite) are available as well as Family Rooms and Dormitory Rooms (up to 8 people) at Bracken Tor or the Filter House.

Charity events

Thinking of running a fund-raising event?

Why not contact us, and we'll help you organise it.

Okehampton YHA (The Goods Shed)

The site at The Goods Shed is ideal for groups doing fund-raising weekends that use the Granit Way or the Coast to Coast path.

We can organise special events, such as The Great Oke abseil, where you can challenge your participants to abseil off the Meldon Viaduct.  Our team of instructors can provide the back-up and support to run the event, whilst you concentrate on the task of getting participants to raise the sponsorship monies for your chosen charity.  Other events on Dartmoor include, the round Dartmoor Cycle Path, a competitive orienteering event on Dartmoor (like the Ten Tors expedition for young people).  We have a great team of instructors that can help formulate an exciting team challenge event.  Paul, our operation manager, does a great job of organising the entertainment and food. At this site we have a licence that covers music and bar, we can also accommodate visitors in both bunk rooms, en-suite rooms and camping. For example, last year we accommodated the Coast to Coast Cycle Ride (in Aid of the Marie Curie Cancer Fund).

Bracken Tor Youth Hostel

The site at Bracken Tor is ideal for groups doing fund-raising weekends, as we have a licence that covers music and bar, we can also accomodate visitors in both bunk rooms, en-suite rooms and campng. For the last 3 years we have hosted a Music weekend raising funds for National Association for Disabled Bikers and Exeter Leukemia Fund and we're happy to announce that the Bracken Tor Chillout will be running in 2012!

Moor Adventuring with Rotary International

"Moor Adventuring" challenge (also known as Rotary Youth Leadership Award: RYLA)

Each year brings another group of 16-18 year olds to Okehampton to try and win the coveted RYLA trophy. In July 2018 Adventure Okehampton will be hosting the 12th RYLA course at YHA Bracken Tor.  Each participant that comes is sponsored by one of the Rotary Clubs of Devon.  Most of them have never met before, so it can be a daunting prospect to work together doing an intensive adventure activity programme over the week.  It's no small feat to complete this course, as their time is packed full of activities, talks and leadership exercises, after a week, there's a combination of exhilaration and fatigue.

The Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) recognised throughout the world run by Adventure Instructors under the guidance of business professionals and Rotarians. Successful attendance on the course also meets the Gold residential requirements for the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Applications are still being welcomed from young people between the ages of 16-18 years who have the talent, energy and motivation. It is open to students, those in work or self employed people and it provides a fantastic opportunity to learn, grow, have fun and make new friends.

Adventure 7

Building on the success of the RYLA course, over the last 3 years Rotary have taken on a new challenge for younger participants aimed at trying to build self-confidence and team awareness.  This week-long non-residential programme is for 11-13 years who live in Okehampton or the Hamlets region. The programme is managed in conjunction with Okehampton College. The Adventure 7 project takes place in August 2018.

What is Rotary

Rotary is one of the largest international service organisations in the world with over 29,000 clubs through 160 countries. Its members are dedicated to humanitarian service, high ethical standards in business and professional life and one of the goals of Rotary is to help young adults discover their leadership potential and develop their self confidence to achieve their aspirations.
